2.10.1a: give examples of, and recognise, molecules that contain the alcohol functional group

Alcohols

  • general formula: CnH2n+1OH
  • names end in -ol
  • functional group: hydroxyl group, OH
  • alcohols are polar
  • hydrogen bonding takes place between alcohol molecules
    • higher melting and boiling points comparable to alkanes
    • solubility in water decreases with increasing chain length
