2.7.1d: recall the trends in solubility of the hydroxides and sulfates of group 2 elements

SOLUBILITY OF HYDROXIDES
Solubility increases down the group
White solids, dissolve to form colourless solutions
The basic hydroxide (OH-) ion makes solutions strongly alkaline
SOLUBILITY OF SULFATES
Solubility decreases down the group
Poor solubility in water
White solids

Eg. barium sulphate is given before a stomach x-ray as a “barium meal”. It is toxic, but insoluble, so can be safely egested
