2.7.1a: explain the trend in the first ionization energy down group 2

Ionisation energy decreases as you go down group 2

  • more shells are added as you go down, so the distance between the nucleus and the outer electrons increases, as well as the shielding effect of the shells
    • so, as you go down the group, it becomes easier to remove an outer electron
